Day 5: Adventures in Scotland

We had gorgeous Scottish sunshine for Day 5: Adventures in Scotland. In other words, as a Scot explained to me, it was a lovely rainy Sunday! After a very full day for day 4 of adventures in Scotland, we planned a leisurely morning of sightseeing on our way to Dunvegan Castle.
For us, leisurely meant that we didn’t leave until 8:30AM. Since it was a wet, gray day, we skipped the viewpoints of the Northern Minch. In fact, we skipped a lot of places because it was too mucky from the rain. That gave us more time to spend at Dunvegan Castle!
Sightseeing to Dunvegan Castle
First Stop: Rha Waterfall
Our first stop was the Rha Waterfall. It was close to our AirBnB and made an excellent start to the day. Fortunately the car park for Rha Waterfall was delightfully simple to find with easy to follow directions to the waterfall. The waterfall itself was incredible with the peace of the woods and the energy of the water pouring down.
I could have spent all day enjoying the sights, the sounds of the birds, the waterfall, and the fresh scent of the woods and water. However, we had more places to go and fairies to find!
Second Stop: Fairy Glen
We were both looking forward to our second stop: Fairy Glen. As we were walking along in the mist and rain, it occurred to me that MAYBE the foxglove (or lady’s glove as they are called in Scotland) are actually fairies hiding in plain sight.
The one thing that I was told to plan on for Scottish weather is that it will rain! So I took my perfect for any weather equestrian clothes. I stayed dry with my Kerrits rain coat and comfortable with the body temperature regulating sun shirts. Our drizzling Sunday gave me an excellent opportunity to try out my new wellies that I purchased at Green Welly Stop on our way to Glencoe. They are the best rubber boots that I have ever owned!

You will notice that I didn’t bother with taking any pictures of the infamous Fairy circle. My interest is in the real Scotland, not something started by tourists. No matter how many times locals remove the rocks from the circle, visitors keep putting them back. Sadly, this causes unnatural erosion in the area.
Third Stop: Edinbane Pottery
Our third stop was Edinbane Pottery where, on their website, I’d seen a gorgeous creamer. My aunt has a fabulous creamer that she got in Ireland. I wanted to bring home my own special creamer from this Scotland adventure. Fortunately for me, Edinbane Pottery was not only open on a Sunday, but they held a creamer for three months until I was there to pick it up. If you are in the area, I highly recommend Edinbane Pottery for their beautiful Isle of Skye handmade pottery.
Dunvegan Castle

A friend told me that she goes to Dunvegan Castle every chance she gets. After being there, I understand why visiting the castle and gardens would never get old! Not only is it absolutely beautiful in the castle and gardens, but the stories about clan Macleod and the fairy flag are absolutely bewitching.
Because of the inclement weather we didn’t go on a Seal Trip. We did however, enjoy a very delicious lunch at MacLeod Tables Cafe when we got to Dunvegan Castle.
End Goal: Eilean Donan Castle Viewpoints
One of the places that I most wanted to photograph was Eileen Donan Castle. I wasn’t interested in touring the castle, I just wanted my own pictures of this popular castle! You can imagine how excited I was to find a B&B very close to both viewpoints of the castle.

First Stop: The Storr

If you read my Isle of Skye destination post, you know that there are so many places to go and things to see and do. Not only was there not enough time for a majority of things on my list, but weather also played a factor in what we were able to do. My aunt and I both wanted to see and get some pictures of the Old Man of Storr since we were close. However, it was cloudy and very windy. The Storr is one of the places that comes with a serious warning about watching the weather. It was blowing so hard with gusts that made it difficult to stand and almost impossible hold still enough to take pictures so I didn’t go far. After all, I still wanted to take pictures of Eilean Donan castle before it was too dark!
This picture came from another tourist that I met at the Fort William train station. Heather was kind enough to let me use her picture of the top of the Storr. I highly advise starting earlier in the day if you want to climb to the Old Man of Storr.
Second Stop: Cairdeas B&B
As they say: location, location, location! I was so excited to find a B&B that was walking distance from Eilean Donan castle. However, at 8pm with the weather being cloudy and a promise of more rain, I chose to drive to the viewpoints.
The previous AirBnB in Uig left a lot to be desired, like quiet neighbors, a good night’s sleep, a kitchen faucet that turned off, and bath towels bigger and thicker than a postage stamp.

Cairdeas B&B had the fluffiest towels I’ve ever seen and the best pancakes with blueberries.

And don’t forget, Cairdeas Bed and Breakfast has a great location!
Final Stop: Eilean Donan Castle Viewpoints

When I realized that we would pass Eilean Donan Castle, I was so excited. It is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland. Being able to take my own photos of this beautiful castle was a dream come true!
My pictures also come with a story. We met the loveliest people on our 2025 adventures in Scotland. I’m talking the nicest, friendliest, most helpful people!
At 5’4″ tall, I’m a bit vertically challenged. In order to get more height for a better angle of picture, I was carefully trying to step up on a precarious fence. A very nice TALL man offered to take a couple higher elevation pictures for me. So I didn’t have to make a difficult decision whether to choose life or the perfect photo!
The End of Day 5: Adventures in Scotland
Day 5: Adventures in Scotland was also the end of our time on the Isle of Skye. We had both been looking forward to all that Skye had to offer, especially getting to visit with my friend and the Loch Coruisk Misty Isle boat trip. However, we still had so many adventures to look forward to and more friends to visit. Our next day’s adventure was the Jacobite Steam Train going over the Glenfinnan Viaduct. That ended up being a huge adventure that I can’t wait to share!
