Day 2: Adventures in Scotland

Day 2: Adventures in Scotland started very early. There is so much to see and do in Stirling Council, and I wanted to see as much as possible! With the chance to see Pictish slabs, Kilmadock church and cemetery was the first stop on our way to National Wallace Monument. Unfortunately, even though we searched, we didn’t see anything THAT old in the cemetery. It was a lovely stop anyway! I had my heart set on getting at least one good picture of Doune Castle. The Doune Roman Hill Fort was also on my wish list. I was delighted that it was a very short walk from the parking lot to both Doune Castle and the Roman Hill Fort!

National Wallace Monument
The National Wallace Monument was the first thing that we had booked for our first full day in Scotland. It was my Must-See for our 2020 dream trip that didn’t happen. The only problem with my fascination and desire for pictures from the top of Wallace Monument is that I’m terrified of heights! Thankfully there are three stops on the way up. After visiting the museum rooms and enjoying the 360* view, I understand why people visit this monument over and over again! Even though it took lots of prayer, counting blessings, and humming scripture songs, I made it all the way up, and back down again. If given the opportunity, I would brave the National Wallace Monument again.

The content of history contained in the Hall of Arms is phenomenal. In fact, The Hall of Heroes and The Royal Chamber were also well worth the terror of the steps!
If you are wondering, William Wallace’s sword truly is as long as it looks! It is 5′ 6″ long, so he had to be well over 6′ tall to carry it!
We were blessed with the most amazing weather for our day in Stirling. The views from The Crown of the monument were truly incredible, as I knew they would be! I was fine while enjoying the 360* views, but then then I had to go back down.
Pictures from The Crown
It felt like you could see forever. I don’t think either of us wanted to leave, but there was so much more to see and do on our day in Stirling.
I was too busy clinging to the wall to get pictures or video of the climb, so here is a RogVlog YouTube video that shows climbing the scary stairs!
We missed seeing the carvings that are in the RogVlog YouTube video. Our time was limited so we rode the shuttle bus up and back down. We had a great driver who was super friendly and a fount of information.

Destination: Lunch!

Our next destination was getting lunch. Our Callander Airbnb host recommended Stephens Bakery. It was on our way to the Old Stirling Bridge. We enjoyed a delicious, properly Scottish repast at Stephens.
There are no pictures of my meals. The food in Scotland was so amazing that I didn’t even think about taking pictures until it was too late! In fact, I have to wonder about people who take pictures of their food. Either it isn’t as tempting as they claim, or this is actually their second meal!
I was delighted to find that I didn’t have the same food allergies and sensitivities in Scotland that I have here in the U.S. I ate all the wheat, grains, legumes, sugar, and dairy that I wanted without any problem.
We were glad that we went with our food experts’ suggestion, even though we had planned to eat at the bakery next to the Stirling Old Bridge.
Stirling Old Bridge
Stirling Old Bridge was another place that I was looking forward to photographing. By ‘photographing’ I mean taking pictures with my iPhone. In fact, I got a brand new iPhone 16 Pro to take pictures. The zoom on it is phenomenal! Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument are about 2 miles away from each other. I am really happy with how close up the pictures appear from that distance.

Stirling Old Town

We had time for a quick exploration of Mars Wark and Stirling Old Town Cemetery before our Walking Tour.
Thanks to National Trust for Scotland (NTSUSA) membership we had 4 hours of parking at Stirling Castle. As well as getting into the sites for free, members also get free, or discounted, parking. The longer you are in Scotland, the more you appreciate this! Parking is premium in Scotland. Be prepared to pay for parking pretty much everywhere. Also be prepared to walk once you do find available parking.
Stirling Old Town Walking Tour
I stumbled across WalkingToursIn.com completely by accident. It only cost $16 to discover Stirling with a local guide, which was money well spent! Our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the history. She made the tour a lot of fun.
We learned that each of the interesting signs above the doors indicated the type of business. The hour and a half went by very quickly. I wish we could have included more of the walking tours in our schedule. The tours are available in Inverness, St. Andrews, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Sadly, we just weren’t in any of those places long enough to take advantage of the walking tours.

Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle and Edinburgh Castle are two places that you want to book your visit as soon as possible. (Tips #3 & #4) The bookings open 3 months in advance. When you book, you are given a 30 minute time slot to arrive. Depending on how busy they are, you may be able to get in earlier. You may lose your booking if you arrive late.
Wherever a guide book was available, I got one. I have enjoyed reviewing my time at each of the places and finding new information that I missed. Plus beautiful professional pictures are included in the guide books. That is especially important for the places where taking pictures was not allowed.
Queen Anne Garden
By the end of the day, we were wiped out! In order to fit in the extra stops, we left our Callander AirBnB just after 8am. Our booked time for Stirling Castle was 4pm, but we were able to get in a little earlier. After going through the castle, we were definitely ready to call it a day. However, when we passed the sign for Queen Anne Garden, we looked at each other and started walking toward the garden. There was no way that we could leave without seeing the beautiful Queen Anne Garden. It is so magical that we temporarily forgot our weariness as we enjoyed the beauty of God’s creation.

The Ending of the Day in Stirling

The ending of the day in Stirling may seem a little anti-climatic. It was after 6pm when we finally left Stirling Castle. Both of us were tired, hungry, and wanting to relax at our AirBnB. We stopped at a Tesco that was more the size of our Walmart on the way back. Oh. My. Goodness. We discovered the most delicious Isle of Mull cheese. Actually, we ended up eating a lot of Scottish cheeses and ‘biscuits’. Otherwise known as ‘crackers’ here in the U.S. Neither of us wanted to eat what we could easily get at home. We were in Scotland, we wanted to experience proper Scottish fare!
After our spectacular first day in Scotland, it didn’t seem that day two could possibly top it. However, our second day surpassed our first day! But then, I think that we said that at the end of every day on our Scotland adventure.
Enjoyed your travel log and written descriptions.
I’m glad that you are enjoying my blog and hope that it is the start for planning a trip to Scotland!
