Day 12: Adventures in Scotland
Day 12: Adventures in Scotland was the fourth and final day in Cullen. This sunny Sunday was also the last opportunity to take any of the MacDonald walks from the book George MacDonald, Cullen, and Malcolm by Michael and Judy Phillips.

The evening that we arrived in Cullen our friends took us up Castle Hill. Then the first day in Cullen we visited Bow Fiddle Rock and walked to where we could see Jenny’s Well and Cave. The second day we walked the Cullen House Grounds Loop. Day three was spent at the Portsoy Boat Festival so we didn’t do any new walks. Since The Odyssey was filming at Findlater Castle, we weren’t able to walk there during this visit in Cullen.
However, it all worked out perfectly since both my aunt and I wanted to walk the Scar Nose Loop from the book. It could not have been a more perfect day four, our last day in Cullen.
Sunday Morning Walk to the Beach
At the end of Day 9: Adventures in Scotland we drove to Portknockie to see Bow Fiddle Rock. We walked to the view of Jenny’s Well and Jenny’s Cave but we didn’t go down the stairs to the sites. This beautiful Sunday my aunt and I were walking from Cullen and we did go down the stairs. At this point everyone should know my feelings about heights. I try to concentrate on the views and getting good pictures. And I pray. I pray that my knocking knees don’t drop me over the edge, that I don’t hyperventilate, and that my shaking hands don’t drop my phone or ruin the pictures.

Walking Back to Cullen on the Beach
There is something about the sound of crashing waves, the feeling of the sand, the coolness of the water and the warmth of the sun that is refreshing to my soul.

My imagination was also able to soar. I read George MacDonald’s book Malcolm for the first time about 40 years ago as a kid. Now I was getting to see Florimel’s rock, the long dune, the preacher’s cave and Seatown. The time that I spent in Cullen was a long awaited dream come true!
By the way, the only rocks or shells that I brought home are the pictures. They belong to the king and stealing from the king is frowned upon in the UK. You can, however, collect all the sea glass that you can find!
Lunch on the Beach
After all of our walking, my aunt and I were ready for lunch. As always we chose something that isn’t standard American fare. We shared the Young Buck Venison Burger and, of course, we got chips! The view of the North Sea made our delicious lunch even more enjoyable.

End of the Day
From the beach we walked out to the main road. It was bittersweet walking along the same road where we had our first view of Cullen a few days earlier. Both my aunt and I were misty eyed realizing that we would be leaving the next day.
The end of the day wasn’t all sad. We spent more time on the beach with a friend searching for sea glass. Our friends made our last evening special and entertaining.
I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite day in Cullen, but this day when we were quietly enjoying the beauty might be the winner! I loved everything about Scotland but my favorite times were those spent with friends and learning more about Scotland from them.
